19th Century Coin Silver Putti Vase by Gorham
This is an incredible coin silver vase by Gorham from the 1880’s. This piece features stunningly detailed figurative cherubs on either side. This highly sought after style is known as “putti” (the Italian plural for cherub or chubby male figures).
Gotham silver has a rich and interesting history. The Gorham silver company was started in 1831 by Jabez Gorham. Gorham’s business finally took off when he began producing "coin silver" (silver made from melted coins) spoons. These items became so popular he began producing large quantities of coin silver items. To this day, Gorham silver remains highly desirable all over the world.
This stunning piece is approximately 7” high and has a diameter of approximately 3 1/2”. The two figurative cherubs are remarkable detailed. Clearly, this piece was created by a master silversmith. The cherubs are draped in robes and each holds a bottle reminiscent of an ancient Greek Amphora. Around the rim of the piece is beautifully detailed with some impeccable silverware pattern.
This piece is incredibly well marked. On the bottom it reads, “1860. April 26, 1885. from Daniel Lovering Jr., George Stanwood, Horace B. Fisher, Henry W. Daniel.” This piece is also stamped with Gorham’s hallmarks (the lion, anchor, and “G” for Gorham), as well as the number “610”.
Although this piece is made of coin silver it is incredibly sturdy. This piece weighs approximately 299.00 grams or 9.61 troy ounces!
This piece looks perfect alone, although it could accommodate a couple flowers. This is your chance to own beautiful coin silver vase by one of, if not the most, highly sought after silversmiths in the world!
