Rare Sterling Silver Crossley and Smith Bright-cut Floral Spoons
A gorgeous pair of sterling silver table spoons with a gold gilt wash and extraordinary chasework inside the bowl. The etched patterns are beautifully chased, with different sized flowers surrounding a fan with a decorative bird at the center. Each spoon measures 9 inches and the bowl of the spoon is 3 x 2 inches approximately. They weigh 109 grams or 3.5 troy ounces together. The spoons have intricate silver bright cut work all up the front of the handle, ending with flowers and a fan at the finial. The fan at the end of the handle has a circular form, a perfect place for engraving initials. These spoons have not yet been monogrammed, making them a perfect gift. The markings on the back of the spoon are the city mark, the date mark, the duty mark and the maker. The spoons are sterling, made in London, dating these to the Georgian era, between 1786-1821. One of the spoons has the mark RC (with a journey man's dot mark), which stands for Richard Crossley, circa 1812. The other spoon has almost identical marks except for instead of RC it has GSWF making it George Smith (III) & William Fearn, circa 1788, predating the Crossley spoon. Richard Crossley & George Smith were in a partnership and active until 1811. Most likely these spoons were made when they overlapped with designs and silver production. A rare pair of beautiful antique sterling spoons.
