1880s Russian Burl Wood Case by Faberge
A fantastic turn of the century burl wood box from Russia. Originally used as a men's cigarette case, a popular accessory among Russian gentlemen and high class society that dates back to the mid 1800s. The beautiful and natural burling on the wood makes this small box particularly unique. The surface of the case, inside and out has a really special grain, with fantastic swirling orange browns. The box has appears to have a seamless hinged lid and is masterfully constructed with nice soft rounded edges and a great finish. The dovetail hinges and edges of the lid fit together so perfectly that when closed, the case base is made of a single piece of burl wood. In fact, the case is made from only two pieces of exquisite wood, held together by near invisible pins. This box is unmarked by has all the qualities of Peter Carl Faberge's limited edition extraordinarily-made cigarette box. Peter Carl Faberge was a Russian jeweler, best known for the famous Faberge eggs. his limited edition burl cigarette boxes like this one were all unmarked. This is a functional box with impeccable design. The box is in great condition for its age; there is a minute piece of wood missing at one of the edges, where it seems the grain of the wood naturally fell off. The case measures 3 3/8 by 2 3/8 by 3/4 of an inch. A wonderful gift for someone with refined sensibilities, and knows how to appreciate spectacular wood work.
