19th Century Blanc de Chine Porcelain Figure Guanyin

An elegant Chinese "Blanc De Chine" or White China Porcelain figure of Guanyin. The white China figures of the feminine bodhisattva became synonymous with the city of Dehua in the Fujian province, where they were made. The bodhisattva Guanyin sits peacefully in royal ease with her right arm resting on a stack of sutras and the left carrying a small child who holds an ingot and ruyi scepter. The color white has a long tradition in Chinese art, and the Dehua white china is among the favorite of collectors. The milky white achieved in Dehau was unlike any other. It was dug out straight from the ground so it really had no impurities and was stunning in its whiteness. White was also a color associated with religious rituals, so Dehau porcelain became very special. The figure is really quite beautiful; she was made at the turn of the 19th Century, circa 1890 but would work well in any midcentury modern home. The body of the figure is cast into a mold, and is hollow of the inside. The meticulously rendered face, the elaborate and ornate hair-do, the soft pointed hands, as well as other details were added on afterwards. You can see how highly articulated the fingers are, as well as details on the small child. The porcelain work is truly impressive. There is a small firing crack on the back of the figure (see image) but this does not take from the structural integrity of the piece. Porcelain is a clay of very high density and it is also vitreous so a firing crack on the surface such as this one is very common. The figure is quite solid and is in great condition for its age. It measures 9 inches tall by 6 inches wide. It is signed, or stamp marked on the back. It has a light glaze on the garments, a brown crackle effect which was added, giving the figure some nice depth. Guanyin is the Chinese adaptation of Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva who encompasses all compassion. It is not a surprise then, that in the West, as imports came to Europe, the figure of Guanyin came to represent a peaceful maternal figure, such as the Virgin Mary. Guanyin is also short for Guanshiyin, which translated means "the bodhisattva who watches all over the world for those that are crying or suffering". She is known as the keeper of souls. This elegant porcelain white china piece would be wonderful item for a collection, a keeper of peace. A beautiful meditative figure to bring a piece of history and compassion into the home.
