19th Century Scottish Horn Oval Box with Silver Emblem
A beautiful Scottish soft oval box made of horn in dark brown, blank and white hues. The lid and base have been made by the smoothing out of a single piece of horn. The side of the box is also perfectly crafted and hand made. The choice of horn is really special, with a variety of colors and textures. The box is very well made, with amazing curve to the edge, and a nice framing on the top lid. The top lid also has a sterling silver shield on top, where there is a space for a monogram or personalized writing or engraving. The horn box dates to between 1860-1890, when small portable personal items where constructed out of horn material. In Scotland these horn items were quite popular, and horn was often turned into snuff boxes, or mulls. The oval box measures 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches and is about 1 inch deep. This piece makes a great little Victorian era desk item or a wonderful addition to a box collection.
