1880's Japanese Tortoise Shell Carrying Case with Gold Gilt Birds
A beautiful Japanese tortoise shell card carrying case from the late 19th Century with birds flying around a flowering tree. The case is made out of a really wonderful piece of tortoise shell. The hand work in constructing the case is remarkable, as the singular piece of shell has been heated and bent into formation. It has very nice variety of colors from deep brown, to golden and grey, from dense to translucent. The tortoise shell is not chipped and is in great condition, especially great for its age. The only wear is found on the edge of the case, where on part slides into the other, and here the gold gilt is slightly worn. This does not detract from the beauty of the case, and the drawing or design work. The central birds, the flowers, both in the front and the back of the case are in great condition. Even the sides of the case have been decorated with a hand painted golden floral design. The gold birds have a red body, and the paint creates a relief on the shell. The case measures 4.5 x 3 inches and it is about 1/2 an inch deep. It can be used for carrying cards or some other small personal items. The case is strong but is delicately made; it is a truly rare specialty item featuring some elegant Japanese gold gilt work. Perfect for carrying cards in elegance. Circa 1880.
