A Finely Modeled Proto-Classic Nayarit 'Chinesco' Type C Figure of a Contemplative Man
A remarkably fine, West Mexican painted pottery figure of a contemplative man sitting with one leg folded beneath him and the other bent supporting his clasped hands. This superb example was made in the Nayarit region of Mexico approximately 2000 years ago in a style known as 'Chinesco', and the detailed modeling is rather unusual. The male figure retains much of its original paint, and he appears to be wearing a necklace with raised ornaments and on each shoulder is evidence of ritual scarification (bumps). His facial expression bears a very inquisitive or contemplative look to it, an unusually 'humanistic' piece compared to most other Nayarit artifacts.
