Georgian Pince Nez Glasses in Tortoise Shell Case
Original antique pince nez eyeglasess in a beautiful tortoise shell case. Pince nez is French for "pinched nose", so these glasses would worn essentially pinched on the nose to create a subtle and minimal look. The glass on the pince nez is 1.5 inches in diameter, and as there are no arms to the glasses they float and have a very elegant look. There is a hallmark in the clip area that says "FTS-U". The pinced nez glasses were common throughout the 1800's, and were invented in 1810 in Liverpool, England. This pair has a hard bridge, and is adjusted with a second clip. They are functional, and come in a beautiful tortoise shell case, which is as desirable as the spectacular eyeglasses. The tortoise shell case is also from the Georgian era, like the glasses. There is a little nick to the case where the back hinge is but it opens and closes perfectly as it is the soft purple velvet in the interior which holds it together. The case is very thin and measures 4 inches by 1-3/4 inches. The glasses sit inside of the case nicely. There is some slightly faded decorative elements in gold that decorate the top of the case, which is a nice touch. The case has a nice finish to it, the tortoise shell has yellows and orange tones to darker browns that are really fantastic. This eyeglass and case set is really unique, a special collector's item, a beautiful historical object that combines beauty of form and function. Circa 1830.
