Rare George Sharp Sterling Silver Nut Scoop with Squirrel
A rare George Sharp sterling silver nut scoop-spoon with a squirrel. The scoop once had a gold wash finish on the interior, which today is worn, but otherwise this piece is in its original antique condition. The leaf ornament that united the handle to the scoop is ahead of its time, with excellent craftsmanship. George Sharp was a master of finials, and the bulbous decorations at the end of handles. It is unmarked but decidedly a George Sharp piece as it features his classic hexagonal handle, superb silversmith work and a grandiose finial. In 1864 George Sharp made a patent drawing for his designs with notes that state: "ornamental design for the ends of handles of spoons, etc."
The spoon measures 10 inches long, with the scoop measuring 3-1/2 inches. It weighs 119 grams or 3.8 troy ounces. The squirrel at the top is a beautiful addition for this unforgettable piece, a must-have for anyone seeking an exceptional 19th century sterling silver collection. Circa 1870.
