Dramatic and impressive life size sculpture of Majolica Cockatoo by Paul Comoléra
The bird modelled with wings outstretched, perched between two open bamboo stems, black printed factory mark, and impressed shape number 879, measurements 17 ¾ x 13 ¾ x 19 ¼ inches height
Paul Comoléra (1818 - 1897) was born in Paris, he was known as one of the great Animaliers. Comolera proved to be both an incredible art talent and a competent instructor to those choosing to follow in his footsteps.
Pupil of the sculptor Francois Rude, he completed his studies of sculpture with Jules Moigniez (one of the greatest sculptors of the Animalier school).at the Rue d'Enfer.
Comolera's works are much like Moigniez's works in that they all have similar finishes, construction, form, and detail. What sets Comolera's work apart from other sculptors is that his are of a more naturalistic style. Most of the sculptures are birds although he did produce some others such as farm animals. They do not show romantic elements.
Comolera first exhibited his works at Paris Salon in 1846, (where he exhibited regularly until his death), with his sculpture entitled ‘’Golden Pheasants of China’’. Known for his realistic sculptures of farm animals and birds, Comolera is included in the elite school of French Animalier sculptors. His birds were naturalistic, lacking the romantic style of his famous student Jules Moigniez. His sculpture is most detailed and anatomically accurate.
