19th Century Vienna Cold Painted Elephant & Man Sculpture
A beautifully articulated, cold-painted bronze sculpture figurine from Austria, reminiscent of Franz Bergman's Orientalist work of the 19th Century. Although this piece is not signed by the artist, it has all the features of his work. The elephant and figure have been excellently rendered in a realistic detail, and have a nice cold paint application of bold color.
Bergman was the founder of the most popular Viennese bronze foundry in Gablonz in 1838. He is the name everyone associates with Orientalism-animal sculptures made in Europe in cold painted bronze due to their high quality and his world fame. This elephant figure dates to the 1900's, or the turn of the century. The elephant has tusks that are in great condition for their age. The figure riding the elephant extends a stick to keep the animal moving along. The gestures of the human and the animal are realistic and harmonious. The paint on the sculpture remains in great condition, with soft earth red colors, ochres and an olive green, colors that Bergman frequently used. The elephant has a mark on the base denoting it was made in "Austria". The sculpture measures 4-1/2 inches by 4-1/2 inches. It makes a great addition to an antique sculpture collection.
