Mid-Century Barbini Murano Art Glass Purple Apple
Exquisite Alfredo Barbini Murano art glass from the 1950s. This apple is made of hand blown glass with a nice organic texture, quilted patterning, and purple hues. It is a lovely decorative piece of art glass, perhaps for a centerpiece or can also be used for a paper weight. It is made by artist Barbini, a native to the islands of Murano in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. He was an excellent glass maker and designer, who received many honors during his lifetime and exhibited his work at the Venice Biennales from 1950 to 1968. This apple has a cut pontil at the base, which shows you it was hand blown; the end was cut off when the glass was still hot. Also, a gold dust was added onto the stem and the leaf found at the top of the apple, also when the glass was hot, so that the purple glass and the gold could melt and blend together. This art glass piece is a remarkable example of Murano glass. Although the gold has faded with time, it is still very beautiful and the faded colors appear elegant. A wonderful complement to any Mid Century Modern home. The apple measures approximately 4 inches in diameter and 2-1/2 inches tall.
