1868 Sterling Silver Religious Dutch Spoon
An elegant turn-of-the-century sterling silver Dutch spoon, with a saint figure a the finial. The spoon measures 7-1/2 inches and has a bowl that is 2 inches in size. The handle and finial of the spoon have been intricately constructed, with a pierced design of a curling stalk. At the center are some winged figures, or baby angels and they flank the female figure that is holding a child. Perhaps it is Virgin Mary depicted at the terminal of the spoon. Where the stem meets the bowl is another figure, and an assay mark is found to its side. This mark is of Minerva and denotes the year of 1868. The inside of the bowl has two additional marks, one the export mark of 1855-1940 and the dutch location of Schoonhoven. The other side of the bowl also has silver marks, but they are worn and hard to discern. The thematic spoon was often given as a gift at a baby's birth or to honor a family, or celebrate a baptism. It is in great condition, especially for its age. It weighs 61 grams or approximately 2 troy ounces.
