Henri Aumont & Co. 18K Gold and Tortoise Shell Case
A beautiful tortoise shell cigarette case, with 18 karat gold details and chain. It dates to the turn of the century, England. The case has two compartments, one which was previously used for cigarettes and the other for matches. Above the match box is a small match strike, set into the tortoise shell and lined with gold. All hinges are also gold, as is the chain, which traditionally attached to the watch fob worn by the gentleman. The gold on the case has several marks: 18c for carat content and also HA& C, which was the business mark for Henri Aumont & Co. The business was founded by Henri Aumont at Paris in 1875, and then in London around 1883. They specialized in ivory and tortoiseshell work that retailed in the high end store called Asprey. They were in business until around the 1930s. The cigarette case is really a beautiful object, and Henri Aumont was top of the line craftsman when it came to gold inlay in tortoise shell. You can see how well the case is constructed, which is still in perfect working order, even with its age. The case measures 2-1/2 by 3-3/4 by 7/8 inch. The chain hangs about 4 inches. There are some minor divots in the tortoise shell, which come with age, but there are no cracks in it. Because the case was constructed with such a gorgeous and thick piece of tortoise shell it remains sturdy and can still be used as a portable item; it is in great condition.
