Antique Operculum Sterling Silver Ring
This unique piece was recently made into a ring from Victorian bezel set Operculum earrings. Each stone is unique, and has a dark green center that fades into a cream, orange and ends in a brown. The stones, are not technically stones but the lid or covering of certain gastropods, making this material is quite treasured and hard to find. The name Operculum is latin for little lid. More commonly these stones are known as Cats eye or Shiva's eye. They became popular talismans in the Victorian era, dating this necklace to the late 19 century. Traditionally, the shells were brought back by sailors as gifts for their sweethearts, after a trip to the South pacific. They were lucky charms for lovers left behind, and made exotic souvenirs of a long journey. The piece is bezel set into sterling silver and measures 7/8 of an inch in diameter. The ring is in fantastic condition, especially for its age. Operculum jewelry is highly coveted and quite rare. The operculum used for this ring is most likely from the Turban Snail creature. The ring’s total weight is approximately 10 grams and is a size 7 1/2. This gorgeous ring with swirling greens, creams, tan colors and silver makes a great evil eye protection, a romantic talisman, and a perfect gift for someone special.
