1930s Darkwood Box of Rin Tin Tin

Sold

A charming wooden box of the famous Rin Tin Tin German Shepherd dog. Rin Tin Tin was an international star in motion pictures during the 1920s. He was rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier, and later trained to be a dog actor in silent films. Rin Tin Tin has a incredible story, became an immediate box office success and went on to appear in 27 Hollywood films. His celebrity in the movies explains why he is the subject of this small wooden box. The box is made out of various types of antique hardwood, mostly mahogany and oak. It is long and takes on a rectangular form. When opened it has two compartments. The lid closes, but not all the way and there appears to be a small gap. This gap is likely due to the warping of wood over time, and at some point, someone must've tightened the hardware, creating cracks at either end of the box. The cracks are visible but do not detract from the charm of the box, and they don't affect the structure of the box. The wood is quite thick so the box remains very solid. Due to the success of Rin Tin Tin German Shepherd dogs became America's favorite family pets. Dogs have also been man's best friend, which also explains the love with which this portrait of a dog was made. The portrait is made of layers of applied wood, a meticulous process, which is quite elaborate. The edges of the box are also curved, and have a dovetail edge that add to the quality of the woodwork. The way the wood is joined is impeccable. The edges are soft and the wood has a glowing finish. There is a tiny piece of wood missing to the interior of the leg of the box, but this is minor and also does not affect the stability or structure of the box. This box is a beautiful item for a child's room, or an adult dog lover. It measures 4 x 9 inches by 3 inches tall. Can fit a wide variety of small personal items, from jewelry to keys.
