A beautiful cast bronze sculpture of a deer in motion, signed on the bottom right by Barye, the renowned 19th century French Animalier. Barye (1796-1875) was known for his staunch perfectionism. This bronze deer was sculpted with incredible detail in 1850 Paris, France where he had his workshop. The deer is remarkably well rendered as he studied most of his animals from life. He spent many of his days at the Jardin des Plants in Paris where he could observe the animals. He is the first and one of the most important sculptors of the French School of Animaliers. His work can be found at the Jardin des Tuileries and at the Louvre, both in Paris.
The bronze piece is set a top a nice deep brown and green marble piece, which complements the nice green patina on the animal. Barye noted that his sculptures were "appropriate to serve as paperweights, desk ornaments, and shelf ornaments." This deer measures 4 x 3 x 1-1/2 inches. This superb art piece exemplifies the Animalier movement of art, prominent in the late 19th Century France among all sections of the middle-classes.
