Stunning 18th Century Chinese Ladies' Window Screen

A very rare and beautiful Chinese Ladies' Window Screen from Shanxi Province, China. This screen would have origined from a wealthier household where the home was built around a central courtyard. There were originally solid pieces of board that fit behind the open lattice work. During the day, these panels were removed to allow air and light to enter the home. The smaller pair of shutters would open up so that someone inside could easily converse with someone outside. The screen is decorated with auspicious motifs - the trailing grass dragon, the thundering spiral and the plum flower. Ornately carved scholars items adorn the central area of the screen - finished in cinnabar and gold gilt. This screen is a magnificent piece of architectural art or wall hanging.
