Lamu is an amazing very old city built on an island in the north of Kenya. The first written records date to about 1415 AD. Many of the streets are the width of a donkey and the old homes are fortified with these heavy doors centering on large courtyards. Most of the living is done comfortably on the roofs. I was fortunate to travel there in 1988. I imagine much has changed, but as it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site I hope much is still the same. These doors show a wonderful fusion of Islamic and African decorative art. We think that they date to the 19th century.
