Italian Antique Terracotta Olive Oil Jar from Puglia

Sold

This rustic antique terracotta jar is from Puglia, recognizable by its unique shape. This jar, called an “orcio” in Italian, was used to store olive oil. Clearly handmade, this orcio is not perfectly round. Very simply decorated with a dentilated rim and three bands of etched grooves on the top third of the jar. This jar shows evidence of having been buried, as was the tradition for olive oil storage. The inside of the jar has a dark crackle finish.
