Pair of Painted Empire Style Jardinieres, France circa 1860
The simplicity of this pair of jardinieres or flower stands is particularly appealing to a modern eye. Three elegant slender legs curve down from the container to the floor to support the flower pot with each leg featuring a swan's head. The lovely tilt of the swan's head and beak echo the sweep of the legs emphasizing the profile. Set between the three legs is a sphere whose shape continues the rounded effect. The circular cylinder conceals the original metal pot that actually holds the flower container and another word for these pieces is the French "cachepot" which literally means hidden pot. When elevated like this the correct term is "jardiniere" taken from the French word for garden which is "jardin". The lovely soft grey painted finish adds to the overall effect and focuses attention on the flowering plant contained by the antique French jardiniere.
