Tall Copper Armillary Sphere on Stone Column, France circa 1960
This charming French garden ornament features a tapered stone column with each of the six sides embellished with a climbing vine with well modeled leaves. The hexagon column supports a figure of a man holding aloft a large copper armillary sphere shot through with an arrow point and tail (known as the fletch). Armillary spheres were originally elaborate representations of the celestial sky centered on earth but became progressively more decorative as scientific knowledge increased. This armillary sphere actually has a ring with Arabic numerals indicative of the hours of the day and was possibly used as a sundial. Finished on all sides this vintage garden sculpture possesses great charm.
