Henri II style antique French painted bibliothèque or display cabinet circa 1875 of breakfront form possessing the original antique glass doors and standing on bracket feet. Please notice the subtle manner employed by the designer of this bookcase to enhance its elegant tall appearance. The proportion of the cabinet doors on the top and bottom with their simple rectangular panels, are unbroken by any horizontal line. The pair of cabinet doors in the base each feature a raised panel with a moulded edge and are set below a pair of drawers each retaining their original cast bronze hardware. An unusual touch is the method in which these drawers are secured. The key is placed in a small space between the drawers, and when turned, engages a locking mechanism that moves horizontally and fixes each drawer in place, unable to be opened. Pay particular attention to the crown with its stepped pattering and the frieze that contains rectangular raised panels on the left and right with a pair of shaped panels separated by a vertical raised panel in the centre. Flanking the glazed cabinet doors are pilasters, each topped with a bold flared capital that pushes forward into space as opposed to stretching horizontally. A similar motif appears to flank the lower cabinet doors, but is distinguished by slight differences. Behind the left and centre cabinet doors are shelves for storage, but a surprise is revealed behind the right cabinet door - the vertical dividers were installed for large folio volumes. The upper glazed cabinet doors each open to reveal adjustable shelves as well as a custom painted interior. This is a very well constructed and designed bibliothèque indicative of the best quality in late 19th century French furniture manufacturing. The cabinet disassembles into multiple pieces to ensure it may be easily moved into any space. The lighter appearance also throws the decorative elements into higher relief and enhances their sculptural appeal.
