Antique English George III Mahogany Bookcase Display Cabinet circa 1780

This is a unique piece of antique English cabinetry circa 1780 for several reasons. The upper section has four rectangular doors each fitted with the six original panes of antique glass chosen to maximize the amount of unhindered display space for either books or objects or a combination of pieces. Each door, when opened, reveals the original fitted slats that provide substantial support for the shelves as well as providing the ability to adjust the height as needed. The lower section has a number of features that add to its desirability. First is the arrangement of the twelve drawers with the centre section housing four drawers that are the width of two cabinet doors while the left and right sets of four drawers echo the width of the single cabinet door above. Generally bookcase display cabinets of this sort were of a breakfront English design and possessed closed cabinet doors in the base. Second, this antique English cabinet, really a display cabinet or bookcase, has a flat front and is assembled from three pieces, the lower section of drawers, the upper section of glass fronted cabinet doors and then the separate crown, embellished with finely detailed dentil moulding. And third, the extraordinarily shallow depth of this English bookcase is most rare. All twelve drawers retain their original oval brass drop handle hardware with the embossed surface and polished gleam of each contrasting brilliantly with the richness of the mahogany timber. Above the central four drawers there is also a slide that when pulled forward reveals a felted surface for the examination of the rare and valuable pieces behind the locked cabinet doors. The inclusion of this slide indicates that the entire piece was a commission for an individual who was a collector and connoisseur of fine things interested in showing family and friends the fine details and attributes of individual objects and why they were worthy of admiration. In a new interior of our time this cabinet would be ideal for a TV and its shallow depth enables it to be placed in the greatest variety of locations.
