Vintage French Louis XVI Neoclassical Style Painted Buffet Cabinet
This vintage Neoclassical French painted buffet cabinet features a bold profile with angled corners framing a pair of cabinet doors. The top follows the same angled shape and set directly beneath the top is a frieze with a pattern known as a "Vitruvian Scroll" or "Etruscan Wave". This pattern, taken from the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome, was quite popular in the late eighteenth century and appears in both French and English furniture. The pair of cabinet doors each feature a large rectangular panel with an octagon shape as do each of the left and right sides of the cabinet that are each set at an angle. The bold scale of the octagon with its powerful geometric shape in a terrific contrast to the flowing impression of the scrollwork frieze. The cabinet stands upon simple tapered legs that again are in the Neoclassical taste. The antiqued surface of the painted finish is quite handsome and the restrained colour palette fits beautifully with today's interiors.
