Neoclassical Louis XVI Style Mahogany Buffet, Bronze Doré Mounts, Original Marble Top, France c.1900. The handsome lines of this buffet were inspired by the move toward the refined and restrained architecture known as neoclassicism at the end of the eighteenth century. Straight lines combined with an insistence on the most luxurious materials created a powerful effect especially when complemented by the addition of gilded bronze (bronze doré) hardware for drawers, cabinet doors and the feet. This particular buffet features three cabinet doors that each showcase a pattern of mahogany with grain of an extravagantly patterned appearance. Each panel is recessed within the moulded frame of the door to emphasize its importance. The cabinet doors are flanked on the left and right with a section of timber enhanced with deep vertical grooves known as fluting. All three drawers are set flush with the surface to enable the grain of the mahogany to flow freely across the façade. The entire buffet stands upon straight sided tapered legs that reinforce the use of strict geometry in the construction. The warmth of the mahogany timber is highlighted by the use of the gilded bronze escutcheons on all three drawers and cabinet doors. The use of an escutcheon (lock plate) was both ornamental and functional. As keys are made of iron or steel they could easily scratch the softer wood that the interior lock was behind. By placing a metal cover over the key hole its location could be easily ascertained even in low light and the precious timber remained unmarred. Please note the use of a bee for these escutcheons, a motif known for centuries as a symbol of industriousness and perseverance. The original marble top has a moulded edge that extends across the front and sides of the slab and this moulding pattern was taken directly from late eighteenth century architectural detailing.
