Schmieg and Kotzian Bronze Mounted Sideboard
A very fine Crotch Mahogany Sideboard by Schmieg and Kotzian. This rare one of a kind piece was most certainly custom made. The bronze maiden heads having a square shaped body ending in bronze feet. The over-all casing of a warm crotch mahogany with banding and inlaid design. There is a matching dining table sold separately which comes from the same estate as this sideboard. Schmieg & Kotzian, Inc. Designers and Cabinetmakers represented the union of two families who brought the fine art and craftsmanship of Old World cabinetmaking from Europe to America. Henry Kotzian, the brother of Frederick Kotzian, and Karl Schmieg, founders of the firm, started their long careers of furniture manufacture as bound apprentices in London, learning to make furniture by hand according to the old Guild rules and traditions. Upon graduating to the Estate of Journeymen Cabinetmakers, each traveled from town to town, acquiring knowledge of the many different methods of construction and styles of design used by master craftsmen in various parts of Europe.
