Mahogany Louis Philippe Period Marble Top Antique French Buffet circa 1830

The superb simplicity of this antique French Louis Philippe period buffet circa 1830 is a testament to the designer's understanding of the beauty of the mahogany timber. Three rectangular cabinet doors each set with a recessed panel stand upon a plinth base with each door showcasing a large expanse of mahogany with its distinctive grain pattern. The antique marble top is exceptionally thick and reveals its hand cut nature when touched along the rear side with its roughly hewn texture. As the cabinet doors are set with hidden pin hinges and were always meant to stay locked the only hardware visible are the small circular brass escutcheons in each cabinet door. Escutcheons are both decorative and practical as they protect the precious timber from a key when it is inserted into a lock while the gleam of the polished brass reflects the available light in an interior which would have been fire and candle light when this mahogany buffet was created. While all of the doors open fully to reveal storage what is behind the left door is particularly interesting. There are three drawers each with a circular concave profile that enclose a gilded brass knob used to open and close the drawers. Again, the gleam of the material provided an immediate ability to see where the knobs were located in even the dimmest of light. It is sometimes hard to imagine how completely dark interiors were before the invention of first gas and then electric light but furniture makers knew the conditions as they existed and dealt with them in ways that took advantage of what was current. Because these drawers are so finely finished it is entirely possible they were used for silver storage and other valuables. The middle and right doors open to shelving storage but being unfinished most likely housed porcelain. This antique French buffet possesses a most modern appeal with its clean contemporary lines that will be at home in any interior.
