Régence Style Painted Enfilade or Buffet, France, c. 1900
Régence Style Painted Enfilade or Buffet, France c.1900. This handsome storage piece features three large cabinet doors each with its own separate lock. The profile of this piece identifies it as being inspired by the Régence period. Please note that the front corners are set at a fourty five degree angle to the front and sides while the entire cabinet stands on a plinth base that meets the floor. The top follows the same profile and also has a moulded edge that complements the shape of the moulding seen at the top of the inset panel on each of the three cabinet doors. The fact that the top edge of the moulding is horizontal also is a feature of the Régence as opposed to the more curved lines seen a bit later in the eighteenth century during the reign of Louis XV. Both sides and both front corners are defined by an inset panel outlined with moulding as are the two vertical sections that separate the cabinet doors. This classical and balanced moulding detail has quite an architectural flavour and corresponds to the structures and furnishings created during this early eighteenth century period. The oak cabinet retains its painted finish with a lighter colour on the base and a dark, almost black colour on the top.
