Rococo Period Carved Oak Buffet, Four Doors, Germany, Painted Decoration
Rococo Period Carved Oak Buffet, Four Doors, Germany c.1760, Painted Decoration. The dramatic sweep of the façade imbues this cabinet with a decidedly powerful visual presence. The four cabinet doors are each enhanced with carved motifs that are symmetrical in design and placed within a raised moulded border. Please look closely to see that the centre doors are convex in shape with an outward curve to their shape while the outer doors are concave in shape with an inward curve. The beautiful detail of the carved motifs that include both a scallop shell at the top and a palmette (also known as an anthemion) at the base of the two largest cabinet doors along with vines and leaves give a sensuousness to the overall effect because of their movement across the surface. The cabinet stands upon four boldly scaled animal paw feet and all the doors retain their original brass hardware that has aged to a lovely soft colour and patina.
