Biedermeier Period Cherrywood Inlaid Buffet or Cabinet, Vienna, Austria circa 1820. This two door cabinet possesses a powerful visual impact despite its diminutive scale. The balanced and symmetrical arrangement of the design takes advantage of the various patterns of the timbers that includes cherry, walnut, burl walnut and ebonized wood. Because this piece has such a high level of detail on every surface it is obvious it was designed for a specific location in a private home where it would have been approached and seen from all directions and therefore had to be striking from every angle. Please notice that the top, both cabinet doors and both sides feature the same motif of the four edges bounded by stright grained timber set in opposing directions to the placement. Where the timber is laid horizontally the grain runs vertically and where the timber is laid vertically the grains runs in a horizontal direction. Situated in the centre of the top and both cabinet doors is a diamond shaped motif known as a "lozenge". This device has been used in Eastern Europe since both the Neolithic and Paleolithic periods and refers to both fertility and a sown field. In order to known as a "lozenge" the diamond shape must be longer than it is wide as seen on this cabinet. To draw attention to the lozenge even further the interior is set with burl wood and the separation of the lozenges and the rectangular panels is acomplished by the use of a slender line of ebonized timber oloured the deepest black. Even the edge of the top of the cabinet is ebonized wood that provides a sharp definition. The front corners of the top and body of the cabinet are set at a fourty five degree angle and provide an elegant sense of refinement and appearance that is quite appealing. The cabinet stands upon four narrowly tapered legs that are square in shape with the back legs placed at right angles while the front legs follow the same angle as the front corners. This simple shift in direction gives the cabinet an air of refinement and elevates its ability to be used in a variety of interiors.
