Antique Tuscan Italian “Madia” Dough Cabinet
This large pine cabinet from Tuscany called a “madia” dates from the early 1800s. Playing a vital role in a Tuscan kitchen, this cabinet was used in the preparation and storage of bread. The top lifts up to reveal a large area where dough would have been set to proof. The top portion of the front side of the cabinet can be removed allowing for air movement when the top is closed. The lower part of the cabinet would have been used to store baked bread, flour, grains, and utensils.
A drop-down shelf on the back is a later addition and could be removed with minimal impact to the piece. When the shelf is up, the piece is 36” deep.
This madia would make a striking kitchen island/counter or a great storage piece in any room.
