William IV period walnut hanging shelf from England c.1835
William IV period walnut hanging shelf from England c.1835. This charming shelf has many facets that make it a focal point on its own before any objects are added for display. The superb quality of the walnut give it an unusually vibrant lustre while the crenellated pattern of the backsplash on both the upper and lower shelves adds a shapely aspect. Both shelves are joined by four columns turned upon a lathe to give them a baluster form enhanced with a ribbon of carving that ascends in mirror form so the front columns have a different direction than the back columns. All four of the columns are capped with a dramatically shaped finial that reaches a small sphere at the apex. Please note that each shelf has a sloped edge that echoes the curves seen in the overall decorative design that pulls the entire piece together as a whole. Because the shelf is wide and not very high there are many options for it to be used within an interior.
