Louis XVI Period Painted French Corner Cabinet, France circa 1780
The lovely bouquet of flowers hand painted on the door of this antique French corner cabinet captures the desire of to be surrounded by flowers all year long. It is difficult to imagine how cold the winters were inside a home in the eighteenth century with dreary and dark days. Brightening an interior with paint was the perfect solution. Flowers were an especially desirable solution as they were continual reminders of warmer days ahead full of the lushness of spring and summer. This corner cabinet has a curved front with a door that follows the same shape which was an exceptionally difficult construction technique before the invention of steam presses to bend wood. The door opens with its iron lock and key to reveal two interior shelves with curved fronts. As this is antique paint there are marvelous signs of age and use across the entire cabinet that give a sense of depth and the passage of time impossible to duplicate with freshly applied painted finishes.
