Louis XVI Period Antique French Oak Chest of Drawers circa 1790
The slender and elegant design of this antique French chest demonstrates the design aesthetic of late eighteenth century France under the rule of Louis XVI (1774-1792) when restraint and angularity replaced the exuberant flourishes of the Rococo style. Each of the three drawers feature an arrangement of diamond shaped lozenges with the left and right lozenge enclosing the original drop cabinet pull while the centre diamond frames the keyhole. The change in shape between the centre and outer lozenges and the half moon shape of the handles creates visual contrast resulting in interest and allure. The three drawers are flanked by sections of vertical fluting where the grooves that extend the full length capture light creating intriguing shadows. Another subtle decorative element is the use of stylized tassel sections set below the apron in the centre as well framing the front legs on the front and sides. The legs feature a straight taper while each side has a deeply recessed panel that adds definition.
