Louis Philippe Mahogany Chest of Drawers, Beech Inlay, Marble Top, France circa 1840
Louis Philippe Mahogany Chest of Drawers, Beech Inlay, Marble Top, France c.1840. The extraordinary grain of the mahogany on this chest has been carefully matched to create the pattern of an upward cascade with an enchanting variation in the color. In addition the chest features a slender line of beechwood inlay that defines each drawer front as well as the sides and the rectangular sections of the base. The unique profile to the area beneath the marble top and the gentle curves of the feet are hallmarks of the style developed when Louis Philippe was King of France (1830-1848) as is the use of exceptional timber chosen for its powerful appearance. This particular chest of drawers has the added feature of a hidden drawer at the base that is accessed by pulling on the underside. When closed this drawer appears to be part of the chest itself and was only incorporated on better quality pieces designed to maximize the available storage. The chest was always meant to be seen from both all angles because it is finished on the sides as well as the front and the back feet have the same completed profile as the front legs. This is especially important in the twenty first century as all interiors are fully illuminated by electricity so every aspect of a piece of furniture is fully visible.
