18th Century Spanish-Italian Vargueño Seated on a Traditional Vargueño Table

List Price $35,000

18th century Spanish-Italian bone and ebonized Vargueño seated on a traditional turned ebonized base with walnut top and wrought iron supports.
The Vargueño table and chest originated in Bargas Spain in the provence of Toledo and is the most representative and recognizable form of traditional Spanish furniture.
Our Vargueno was made in Bargas for the Spanish court residing in Naples in the 18th century. During the Spanish colonization of Naples Italy Vargueños were made in Spain and sent to Naples to decorate the Spanish palaces and consulates. The form reached its greatest splendor in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The typical materials of the Vargueño were walnut and ebony, decorated with bone, ivory and tortoiseshell.
Vargeños are traditionally divided in two parts to facilitate transportation.
The upper section consisting of drawers decorated with inlaid and incised bone ornamentation and used to keep documents, jewels, important keys and gold coins. The lower part is the traditional table with turned ebonized legs, a walnut top and wrought iron supports.
Our Vargueño cabinet has three Christian images incised in bone and the initials of the aristocratic family CW that commissioned this masterpiece framed above the center door. The two architectural drawer fronts on the bottom right and left with the portraits of the saints have a hidden locking mechanism.
The drawers are an ebonized hard wood that has been finely inlaid with bone in a delicate renaissance pattern. The cabinet frame is veneered with bone that has been incised with floral patterns. The sides are inlaid in a geometric pattern with walnut and lemon wood and the brass work on the gallery, the finials and side handles is original.

There is a similar Vargueño represented in the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid.
