George III Period Oak Mule Chest, England circa 1780
George III period oak mule chest cross banded with mahogany, England c.1780. This handsome chest has a lift lid that reveals an open storage space with the unique addition of an interior set of four drawers on the left hand side each affixed with its own individual brass pull. The lid of the chest was always kept locked so valuable textiles, candles and silver could be safely stored while remaining easily accessible. Each of the front corners is distinguished by a quarter column while the top lid and the drawer fronts are embellished with a crossband of contrasting mahogany against the oak timber. The definition provided by the inset panels gives the front and sides of the chest a distinctive profile and enables the play of shadows against the surface to create a subtle three dimensional effect.
