Louis Philippe Walnut Chest, Marble Top, France circa 1850
The striking pattern of the figured walnut used on this antique Louis Philipe chest of drawers makes a memorable impression. The walnut timber has been cut to showcase the grain and laid upon the chest to create the appearance of draped cloth. Please notice that the pattern begins just beneath the marble top and extends across the entire façade reaching all the way to the base in order to give the impression that it is a single piece of wood. Both of the front corners are gently rounded in both the marble and walnut to create a seamless transition with the marble also having a single horizontal line chiseled into the centre of the edge. While the top drawer has a distinctive curved profile the three lower drawers are framed by a wide section of moulding that sets them slightly back from the front. Both of the sides have figured walnut with a lovely grain so the chest may be approached from any direction with pleasure.
