Antique English Jacobean Oak Chest of Drawers circa 1840 Painted Finish
This antique English Jacobean oak chest chest of drawers circa 1840 has a fresh appearance due to the hand applied painted finish. When this chest was first constructed the artisan looked back to the boldly carved architectural details from the 1600's and incorporated the overscale palm leaf designs known as "anthemions" in this chest. The balance and symmetry of the carvings is quite pleasing visually with the outward spray of the design contained within the rectangular form of the chest. This piece was designed to emphasize the contrast between the heavily carved front and the simplicity of the sides in order to focus attention on the front. As the paint aged over time and use a unique effect has been reached. The chest has a typical Georgian period (1720-1820) configuration with two short drawers over three long drawers all fitted with their original brass hardware. By elevating this chest on substantial bracket feet seen on both the front and back the cabinet maker ensured the carving was the main attraction.
