English Mahogany Bowfront Chest, circa 1820
A strong and striking Sheraton style chest from the early 19th century, this piece has glowing flame mahogany drawer fronts with beaded edges and oval brasses. It is a fine example of the way Thomas Sheraton introduced gentle curves to the sterner forms of Georgian furniture. Curves appear in the swell of the bowed front, in the slight sweep of the front feet, and in the graceful cut of the apron, both front and side.
This chest has an old, but not original surface. It is not as glossy as it appears under our strong photo lights; rather it has a soft satin surface that is very appealing. The oval brasses are old replacements, all the brass locks are in place. There are two dividers in the top drawer. It is in excellent condition for an antique chest - a few small age cracks but no major ones. The top is one large piece of wood in great condition for its age, with a thoughtful overhang at the back that lets you place this flush against the wall, regardless of any baseboard.
Graceful and built to last, this chest can look equally at home in a bedroom or a living area. Could be a beautiful accent in a tall entry hall as well - the perfect height to catch your keys.
