North German Louis Philippe Chest of Drawers in Birch, c. 1850
North German Louis-Philippe chest of drawers in birch, circa 1850.
The carved floral key plate in wood are the original. Low, small chest of drawers like this one work very well as night stands.
Germany has a period which transitions out of Biedermeier from 1840-1870 they call Louis-Philippe, after the French monarch who reigned from 1830 to 1848. This period in furniture design marked a return to a more curved line with stylized ornamentation, in contrast to Biedermeier's more angular lines. Our chest of drawers is typical of the North German form of Louis-Philippe from the Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein regions.
