Bow Front Faux Bamboo Chest of Drawers, England circa 1860
This antique English chest of drawers is an excellent example of the desire and interest in the Orient with its use of a bamboo timber motif. As bamboo is not native to the UK it was imported and used to make furniture and decorative objects. Local furniture makers soon began to copy the appearance of bamboo by carving timber to resemble the distinctive line of this exotic species of wood. There are five drawers to the chest with the upper two placed side by side and the lower three spanning the width of the chest. All five follow the same bow front pattern and have wooden knob pulls. The top edge of the chest and traverses between the drawers are fitted with applied moulding carved to look like by bamboo and the entire chest was painted black with pale highlights sometime in the past. The chest is raised upon bracket feet with a curved apron cutout on both the front and sides that gives the chest a light appearance.
