Scorched Bamboo Coat, Hat, Umbrella, Cane Stand, Original Mirror Paris, France circa 1890
Scorched Bamboo Coat/Hat/Umbrella/Cane Stand, Original Mirror, Paris, France c.1890. The charming combination of curved and straight bamboo embodies the exuberance of the Belle Époque period in France. While the coat stand has a functional ole to play in daily life it is almost a piece of sculpture with its well balanced arrangement of hooks for outerwear as well as a section devoted to umbrellas and canes. Being a natural material the bamboo (which was actually scorched with an open flame) has a distinctive color as well as being naturally resistant to water. The base of the stand retains its original painted drip pan to capture any remaining water when furling an umbrella after being out in the rain. The piece also has a large beveled mirror set within the framework to check one's appearance on both entering and leaving a home. Please notice that this is the original mirror and shows the passage of time with its flecked surface. The openness of the stand and its clever use of materials to produce a piece both beautiful and useful remains potent today for a modern home.
