French Country Secretaire Bookcase, 18th Century
A magnificent 18th century French scriban, secretaire and bookcase. Made of solid walnut with raised panels and having three parts: Upper bibliotheque has handblown, in-curved glass panel doors, two adjustable shelves and chapeau de gendarme crown, the slant front of the abbattant is decorated with inlaid stars and opens to an embossed original leather writing surface and 15 small drawers with brass pulls and compartments hiding two secrets drawers, three bottom cabinets, the center one having a lock and key with latches that lock the doors on either side. Retaining a beautiful original waxed patina. Working locks with three keys. In excellent condition for its age. Upper part is 13" deep. Inside depth of shelf is 10.5". The overall depth with the desk open is 35". Probably from The Alsace Province of France. The glass of the right door has been replaced..
