New England Hepplewhite Drop Front Desk, Dated 1807
Drop front desks offer great modern storage and clutter control in an interesting form. This one is a simply shaped chest with delicate line inlay, ebony escutcheons, and fitted interior. It has gently flared French feet and oval Hepplewhite brasses. The primary wood is cherry, and the color is a buttery warm brown - not too red, not too yellow, with a glow of age.
Helpful storage -- the six little drawers and five cubby holes are perfect for chargers, cables, passports, and keys. The desk surface will hide paperwork clutter when you close the lid. And the wide drawers below fit gift wrap, children's art and school projects, or parts and miscellaneous supplies for your own pursuits. Although you're not likely to sit at this desk to pen a letter, like its first owner 200 years ago, you'll find it is a practical and beautiful storage piece for the 21st century.
