Chambri Pottery Art Sculpture from Papua New Guinea

A fantastic piece of pottery art from the Chambri Lakes region of Papua New Guinea, made of terra cotta and the earth pigments of black and white. This piece comes from the tradition of the Aibom Viollage, where terra cotta pottery is very important for the preparation of meals and food. This clay art piece has a base which is an upside down bowl, and on top rests a figure that holds a bird, perhaps a spirit animal, or guide. The base was made with coils, as hand made pots are shaped, and then this pot is re-purposed to become a traditional roof finial figure. Women in the village of Aibom typically begin the construction of the bowl, and after the men shape the faces of figures on top and paint them. These sculptures, part cooking pot, part decoration, are also known as ceremonial pots. They mark the transition of functional clay pieces to the appreciation of the art form, as they become less functional and more decorative. The Chambri earthenware is made a long the Sepik River and is fired in a local pit, through a process that puts the clay into thermal shock and can cause small firing cracks. This piece has a couple which are barely visible but these are not compromising the structure of the piece. Because of the fragility of these earthenwares, Chambri pottery is quite rare and not often found outside of the region. This piece is a de-aquisitioned piece from a Museum. The clay piece is 5 1/2 inches at the base and 15 inches tall. It is in great condition, with its natural oxide pigments on the surface, and the protruding lively features of the figure and animal holding strong.
