Khmer Pot with Flared Opening, Thailand
Very old Khmer pot from Thailand with a striking form, in great condition, likely 700-800 years old. The wide flared opening was typical of Khmer everyday pottery, but this body form is less common. Exceptionally cool piece! Earthy dark brownish black glaze with incised decoration. Nice size at 14" tall - big enough for presence but an easy scale to use. Combines beautifully with other Khmer pieces we have, some with classical form, others with modern lines, but all with great sculptural forms!
The color is dark and dynamic, and we have shown it in various light.
Khmer ceramics of this type were made from the 9th to the 14th century. People and potters migrated to north central Thailand in the 14th century where this vase came from. Ceramics and glazes of this form stopped being made in the late 14th century as people preferred Chinese porcelain, and the Khmer culture fell. Few of the small kilns had any production after the 15th century. We acquired this and a number of other ones from a Philadelphia university that sought anonymity, so we have fewer details than we would like on this.
This leave us with the remarkable objects themselves. We believe these are many centuries old, but there is no written proof. These vessels are beautiful, dramatic, and unusual. They have charismatic presence, whatever their history. We suggest you consider them for their striking form, texture, presence, and mysterious past. Price is for one, we have additional ones in different shapes.
