Monumental Minton Majolica Mermaid Handled Ewer


This is an extremely rare piece of Minton Majolica of museum quality, which had never previously appeared on the market before a Majolica auction in 2002. The Shape number is #1290 and date cypher for 1871.

The handle is modeled with a mermaid with braided hair, fish scale vest and tail intertwined with satyr's horns, a large shell decorates the top of the bulbous portion which has a putti just below. The garland swags of leaves and berries adorn the sides with panels of lady with cherubs in relief, the base is surrounded by small shells, beautiful lavender interior.
