Pair of Overglaze Enamel Chinese Double Gourd Vase
A lovely pair of double gourd vases, which are a near match, but hand painted with overglaze enamel to create a beautiful and unique set. The vases have a fantastic shape; they are bulbous in two different places, measure 8 inches tall and approximately 3. inches at its widest points. They date to the 1890s, when Chinese vases were not factory made and were all irregular and unique, combining organic forms with natural subject matter. Opulent birds in lush landscapes, flying bats and bold peony flowers decorate the vases from top to bottom. Crosshatching patterns and colorful lines fill the vases. One vase appears to be slightly fuller than the other because of the second gourd being slightly more bulbous. They are truly a lovely pair. Together you can see the ceramic processes- the first layer of white glaze- and then the second of overglaze which was painted after the first firing. They both have Chinese lettering on the base, and are in perfect condition. No chips, no cracking. A superb pair of vases with beautiful Chinese hand-painting from the 19th Century.
